(100% Natalie-Portman.net) - Thanks to our pal Dany of Israel (no not the cat from the Smurfs) for submitting a transcript of a Natalie interview. Apparently Anywhere But Here just opened in Israel and Natalie is off promoting her most previous movie. Dany states, "I live in Israel and recently Israeli TV ran an interview with Natalie (she spoke Hebrew!) and also an interview with her grandmother , who lives in Tel Aviv." Transcript of Natalie's Interview from Israeli TV

Interviewed Week of February 14, 2000
Transcribed by Dany

"Anywhere But Here" just opened in Israel (I saw it a day before yesterday, it's a very good movie), so she had spoken a few minutes about her charachter , saying that Ann had to grow up on her own and sort of be a "parent" to her mother . The interviewer then complimented her on her Hebrew.

Natalie : "My father is an Israeli so I speak Hebrew to him . I went to a Jewish school until the 8th grade .I know that I am not that good [ in Hebrew ] , but I am trying to speak Hebrew as much as I can . At least , my Hebrew is better than the Hebrew of most Americans" [she probably meant that other American Jews don't know Hebrew ] ( I have to point out that she speaks well , but has an accent ) .

Interviewer : "Do you also feel that you are on that territory between childhood and adulthood?"

Natalie : "Yes... (smiling) well, not exactly. I know how to have fun, but I am a little old now."

Interviewer : "You just started college. Did it make it easier to relate to Ann's experience?"

Natalie : "Yes, I can easily relate to this. I am the only child and very close to my parents . I've spent a lot of time with them and suddenly I am on my own - doing homework alone, cleaning my room alone."

After the interview the host of the program said that Natalie is studying Hebrew literature in Harvard. And then there was an interview with Natalie's grandmother, who lives in Tel-Aviv. She came across as an Israeli patriot of the old school. She lamented the fact that Natalie and her family left Israel. She said that then Natalie's parents got married, she and her husband wanted them to stay in Israel, whereas Natalie's American grandparents (her mother's parents) wanted them to go to the USA. "In the end," she said sighing, "They won and we lost." When asked about her grandaughter's career he said that although she knew Natalie did well in school and camp theatrical productions, she never thought that Natalie would become a professional actress. "Until the day Natalie went to that pizza place," she said laughing. She (grandmother) also was a little scared by all the violence in "Leon." On the walls of her apartment there are numerous pictures of Natalie. Grandmother concluded by saying that she loves Natalie and is very proud of her.

The host of the show then said that a year ago Natalie visited Israel and nobody noticed .
