Portman was a straight-A student. "I'd rather be smart than be a movie star," she told an interviewer. Natalie attended a Jewish elementary school, the Solomon Schechter Day School of Glen Cove in New York even though she spoke of her parents not being religious. Natalie reportedly chose not to attend the opening premiere of Star Wars: Episode I so she could study for her final exams in high school. Portman graduated from the Syosset High School.
Natalie would go on to attend Harvard University. During her studies at Harvard, Natalie was a research assistant for Alan Dershowitz (whom he thanked in The Case for Israel). Natalie graduated from Harvard College in June 2003 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. In the Spring of 2004, Natalie pursued graduate studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Natalie appeared as a guest lecturer at a Columbia University couse on terrorism and counter-terrorism in March 2006 which was related to her film V for Vendetta. Natalie is bilingual in both English and Hewbrew. She also studied Arabic, German, Japanee and French.
While a student, Natalie was the co-author of a couple research papers published in scientific journals. Natalie's 1998 high school paper "Enzymatic Production of Hydrogen" was submitted to the Intel Science Talent Search. Natalie also provided contributions to "Frontal Lobe Activation During Object Permanence" - a study on memory - while she was a Harvard undergrad.
