HOLLYWOOD Mon Aug 04, 2008 01:22 AM (100% Natalie-Portman.net) - Right from the start with the creative opening credits, this film appeared captivating. The music was whimsical and imaginative. Being a fan of the ABC series Pushing Daisies, this film seemed to be of the same flavor, although aimed at a younger audience. The musical score only enhances the film and gives it emotion allowing one to have some suspension of disbelief.
Within a half hour through the film, I became dulled to the fanciful nature of the film. It became a chore to watch and I started to take several breaks from this DVD to pursue more important things like surfing the web. If I weren't obligated to review this film, I may have just not continued any further. To not resume watching this film would've been a shame. Sure, the pace of the film started out slow but the character development began to strike curiosity.
Veteran actor Dustin Hoffman played the eccentric toystore owner as if it were a reprise of his role in Rain Man - except this time with a bit more character with a hint of dementia thrown in. Natalie Portman's petite figure as Molly Mahoney was the perfect fit as a kid at heart trying to cultivate her latent talents. There was a bit of metaphor with the piano as Natalie seemed to strike the right chords at key moments to evoke joy, melancholy or anguish. Portman's acting was persuasive and fit well with the storytelling. At times, the wide angle closeups did make her look part hobbit when the camera dove right into her forehead. As for Jason Bateman, I've never seen him as a big screen actor - until now. He played the likable role of an uptight accountant.
The film deals with personal growth, hidden talents and believing in yourself to succeed. In those respects, it can be applied to anyone. To watch this film was a captivating experience. I give it a 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

SAN DIEGO Thu July 24, 2008 02:13 AM - Attention fellow comrades, compatriots and the socially inept. The annual passage has returned for those whose IQ exceeds their own weight. This is the event for those persecuted for their superior intellectual skills and physical inadequacies. Rise, those that exist covertly within the fabric of society with chronic breeding problems (to the cerebral detriment of mankind as a whole). Comic-Con International started with preview night on Wed July 23rd with regular convention days from Thu July 24th to Sun July 27th. The convention is sold out and only available for those that have pre-registered. While Natalie Portman has attended this event in the past, we aren't holding our breath this year. There is other things to look out for such as coverage of the Star Wars: Clone Wars and anything else that turns up like those in costume.

HOLLYWOOD Mon July 21, 2008 2:00 AM (100% Natalie-Portman.net) - This movie stars Zach Braff who is also writer and director of this production. With so much involvement by Braff, one has to wonder if Natalie Portman's role was simply conceived so Zach could get in a few smooches with the Hollywood starlet. I'll be up front with you fans, there are no car chases, nobody gets or shot or blown up during the course of the film. Scripts that Natalie Portman takes on tend to force me to think from a different perspective. I had to slow down and think out of the box and realize this movie was marketed to those with a slower pace of life. Its target market is a college aged crowd or those in small towns that could probably appreciate the slower moments in life among friends. Portman was peppy and sparkly in portraying Samantha (Sam) - it was as if she reprises the role of Marty from Beautiful Girls. The film was set in a small town where everybody knew each other so this could have been the Beautiful Girls sequel featuring Marty all grown up. There were some really tender moments where Natalie performed like a genuine sweetheart. At the turn of a dime, she could be so random with her acting skills - speaking in terms of a positive context. She just seemed to fit this character perfectly and captured the persona intended by the director. Yes, this film had no action yet it's a movie about taking action and initiative. I would recommend it to others in this market niche and age group. *** 1/2 out of 5 stars. Please visit the gallery for the Garden State - Screen Captures.

HOLLYWOOD Sun July 14, 2008 3:48 AM (100% Natalie-Portman.net) - Thanks to MORTUS for this find, we have higher quality beach photograhps from the notorious St. Barts incident. Instead of scans of the Feb 2000 tabloids, these appear to be straight from the slides. The images appear to be shot on film due with the vertical scratches which are notorious of old school film scans. Keep in mind, we run a family show so if you're looking for nude or topless shots then don't bother clicking.
